“Yellow, Amarillo, Brick House — all names that I’ve called that horse. He’s short and stocky, hangs his lower lip, just a chill palomino gelding. He’s the most solid horse in my string. He can do any job anywhere without ever losing his cool. If I have a dicey job to do — a prolapsed cow, a high-headed neighbor yearling, a choking bull — I choose Yellow. He’s lazy by nature, but has this switch you can flip on when you need to get after it. I call him a brick house because when you catch whatever you’ve roped he just plants himself and holds. Doesn’t matter how heavy, or if they’re crashing through brush, or if I have to jump off to tie them down, he holds them without the slightest bit of nerves. He’s also a horse you can put a first-time rider on and he’ll take care of them all day. That’s the hardest part of having a good horse like Yellow, he’s my go-to-guy but I know that I have to give him up to the interns and less experienced riders that often join us. There’s long periods of time that I don’t ride Yellow.
